The architectural forms of the model are built out of dough and enclosed in a plexi-glass case turning the model into a microcosm. The environmental conditions inside the microcosm are monitored and manipulated using sensors that track temperature, light and humidity, exterior to the building containing the model. Low-tech systems supply the microcosm with water, heat and aeration in an attempt to emulate the environmental conditions outside. Over time, the architectural elements in the model undergo a considerable transformation as a type of fungi that grows on food overtakes the model. These transformations will be documented and made observable through a series of small high-resolution web cameras. People can track the transformation of the model on MAD’s website. This documentation will culminate into a time-lapse video. Throughout her residency, Holly Schmidt is exploring the theoretical work of Bruno Latour and Isabelle Stenger and their argument for a different understanding of nature and politics. In her graduate studies at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, she is engaged in creative practice and academic research focused on the processes involved in the designing and engineering of environments and the ethical implications. |

De architectonische vormen van het model zijn gemaakt van deeg en ingesloten onder een plexiglas kap, waardoor het model in een microkosmos verandert. De omstandigheden in het microkosmos worden gecontroleerd en gemanipuleerd door sensoren die temperatuur, licht en luchtvochtigheid bijhouden, rondom het gebouw in het model. Low-tech systemen voorzien het model van water, warmte en beluchting, in een poging de echte omstandigheden buiten te emuleren. In de loop van de tijd zullen de elementen in het model aanzienlijk vervormen, als de schimmels gaan groeien en het model overnemen. Deze transformaties worden gedocumenteerd en zichtbaar gemaakt met een reeks kleine web camera's. Bezoekers kunnen de transformatie volgen via de MAD-website. Deze documentatie zal uitmonden in een time-lapse video. Tijdens haar verblijf verkent Holly Schmidt het theoretische werk van Bruno Latour en Isabelle Stenger en hun argumenten voor een ander begrip van natuur en poltiek. In haar studie aan het Emily Carr University of Art and Design, houdt zij zich bezig met creatief en academisch onderzoek, gefocussed op de processen die betrokken zijn bij het ontwerpen en bouwen van omgevingen en de ethische implicaties hiervan. |
